Befor you go clutching your pearls or looking for the nearest fainting couch, due to President Trump deploying the National Guard, please remember, it has happened previously The President federalized National Guard units under Title 10 / the Insurrection Act to deal with civil unrest, not routine governor activations or disaster responses. Those are:
• 1957 – Little Rock, AR (Eisenhower): Arkansas Guard federalized to enforce school desegregation at Central High.
• 1962 – Oxford, MS (Kennedy): Mississippi Guard federalized amid the Ole Miss integration riot.
• 1963 – Alabama (Kennedy): Alabama Guard federalized twice—in June (University of Alabama “stand in the schoolhouse door”) and September (public schools).
• 1965 – Selma–Montgomery, AL (Johnson): Alabama Guard federalized to protect the voting-rights march.
• 1967 – Detroit, MI (Johnson): Michigan Guard federalized during the Detroit uprising.
• 1968 – Post-MLK assassination unrest (Johnson): Guard federalized in multiple jurisdictions to quell riots.
• 1970 – Postal strike (Nixon): Guard (and other forces) used to keep the mail moving during an illegal nationwide strike.
• 1992 – Los Angeles, CA (George H. W. Bush): California Guard federalized during the LA riots.
