I find it difficult to understand the policy rationale for maintaining the presence of individuals who are in the United States illegally, particularly those who have committed crimes. I have not encountered a clear or well-articulated explanation outlining how this approach serves the broader national interest.

One explanation often offered by critics is that some Democratic policymakers oppose strict enforcement because population counts affect representation and redistricting following the 2030 Census. Under this interpretation, maintaining higher population levels in certain jurisdictions may be viewed as a way to limit potential political losses associated with future reapportionment. This perspective, whether accurate or not, is frequently cited as a motivating factor in the debate.
