A Kaukauna, Wisconsin high school teacher has been placed on administrative leave after posting a message on social media that appeared to celebrate the idea of presidential assassination, according to multiple Wisconsin news outlets.

Patrick Meyer, a Social Studies teacher at Kaukauna High School with more than 20 years in the district, posted the comment on X in apparent response to the April 25 shooting at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner in Washington. The post, which has since been deleted and the account deactivated, referenced historical presidential assassins and included the phrase “MAGAA — make Americans great assassins again.”

The Kaukauna Area School District released a statement confirming the action: “The District has placed the employee on administrative leave and is taking additional action to review the matter in accordance with its policies and procedures.”The district added that it “unequivocally rejects any conduct, expression, or behavior that may encourage, condone, or promote violence in any form.”

The post was widely circulated on social media after U.S. Rep. Tony Wied (R-WI 8th District) shared a screenshot on his Facebook page. Wied called it “disgusting rhetoric” that has “no place in our society.”

State legislators also weighed in. Rep. Shae Sortwell (R-Two Rivers), who represents Kaukauna in the Assembly, posted “Come on, Kaukauna. You are better than this.” Rep. Ron Tusler (R-Harrison) said he “wouldn’t want him teaching my children.”

The district’s statement noted that the content of the post was unrelated to school district business and that “there has been no evidence of a risk to the safety of our students and schools.”

The incident is one of several controversial social media posts to emerge in the aftermath of the Correspondents’ Dinner shooting. A progressive activist and brewery owner in Wisconsin also faced backlash after a post that was condemned by the Wisconsin Democratic Party and multiple Democratic gubernatorial candidates.
